Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of horticultural activities on life satisfaction, depression, and emotional balance among elderly people in rural areas of Jeollanam-do. Twenty elderly people living in rural areas participated. Among the participants, the proportion of elderly women was 85.0%, those in their 70s accounted for 35.0%, and those in their 80s or older accounted for 65.0%. The overall average age was 80.55 years old, and most lived alone. The horticultural activities was conducted once a week, a total of 12 times, and the results were as follows. As a result of evaluating horticultural activity and depression before and after the horticultural activities, there was a statistically significant difference. In particular, scores increased in the areas of participation, interest and assistance, verbal interaction during, self-concept and identity, interpersonal and social relations, cognition and problem solving compared to before horticultural activities (p<0.05). It was confirmed that satisfaction with current life increased after the horticultural activity, and depression was reduced and positive facial expressions in emotional balance and smile scale also improved significantly (p<0.05). It has been shown that horticultural activities give confidence and vitality to elderly people living alone, and are effective in improving emotional stability by reducing depression.
